Lambda
Chi Alpha is a men's social fraternity. We were founded on November 2, 1909,
at Boston University by Warren Albert Cole. Brother Cole wanted to create a
fraternity that accepted men who were not second and third generation college
students. Many of the existing fraternities at that time would only accept
such members. It was through the tireless work of Brother Cole and some of the
earlier members that joined, such as the creator of our initiation ritual,
Brother Jack Mason, that this great fraternity exists today.
From
those cold November days in Boston, Lambda Chi Alpha has grown into being the
third largest of all fraternities. We were one of the first fraternities to
become international with the addition of Canadian chapters. We boast the
largest living membership of all fraternities, both national and
international. We have initiated more than 243,000 members, and there are
currently 10,000 Lambda Chis in 210 chapters located at campuses throughout
the United States and Canada. These are all great feats with our fraternity
being the youngest of all the largest fraternities.
The
dream that inspired Brother Cole in 1909 has definitely grown into an
organization that he would have thought unimaginable. Since 1909, Lambda Chi
Alpha has been a frontrunner of all fraternities. In 1939, the Theta Kappa Nu
fraternity merged into Lambda Chi Alpha. This was the largest merger that the
fraternity world had ever witnessed. In 1972, Lambda Chi Alpha again took the
lead when it was the first fraternity to abolish its traditional pledge
program for the Associate Member Program. The Associate Member Program focuses
upon equality among members - the uninitiated associate and initiated brother
alike. Through this program, our fraternity truly tries to live by one of its
open mottoes - Vir Quisque Vir, meaning "Every Man a Man."
In the
1990s, Lambda Chi Alpha continued breaking records. The North American Food
Drive, sponsored by our international fraternity, has become the largest
single-day community service event to be performed by a Greek-lettered
organization. All chapters of Lambda Chi Alpha participate in this by
collecting food on the first weekend of November each year. In November of
2005, chapters across the United States and Canada collected more than 2
million pounds of food for the needy in their respective communities. Our
chapter has placed in the top three chapters for pounds collected three times
since the Food Drive began.
